Local Area
Stanford, Montana is the county seat of Judith Basin County and historically was a site on the Fort Benton-Billings stage route. It was also a gathering site for the cowboys and cattle companies that utilized the lush Judith Basin before homesteaders arrived. In 1880, Calvin and Edward Bower arrived in the area with 1000 head of sheep and secured a hundred thousand acres. They named this settlement in memory of the home that they had left of Stanfordville in New York. Today, Stanford is an agricultural community that supports its area farmers and ranchers while offering up many recreational opportunities. Explore the Lewis and Clark National Forest and the Judith
River Wildlife Management Area where large herds of elk can be seen in late fall and early winter. Ackley Lake State Park is nearby for boating, fishing, floating, and camping. For some history, stop at the Judith Basin County Museum. This museum was opened in 1967 and displays many old-time articles, pictures, and books. It also has a collection of 2082 salt and pepper shakers, 50,000 buttons, and more! View some of the famous paintings by Charles M Russell that call the museum home. Located centrally, you can travel in any direction from Stanford and find many of Montana's delights.
Area Attractions
Ackley Lake State Park
Nestled in the heart of Montana, Ackley Lake State Park offers 290 acres of park that includes mountain views and Ackley Lake. The lake provides fishing, boating, swimming, birdwatching, picnicking, and camping. It is stocked with Rainbow Trout and Tiger Muskie. The state park has camping sites and two boat launches. The lake is often good angling for 10-to-15-inch fish.
Little Belt Mountains
The Little Belt Mountains are a section of the rugged Rocky Mountains. They lie mostly in the Lewis and Clark National Forest. The unspoiled nature is used for logging and recreation. The mountains have been mined for silver since the 1880s and for sapphires since 1896. The famous Yogo sapphire is mined near Yogo Creek. The highest peak of the range is Big Baldy Mountain towering at 9,175 feet. Ponderosa pines and Douglas-firs predominantly fill the forest providing cover for black bear, elk, white-tailed, and mule deer. Rifle and archery hunting is excellent, and during the fall, hunter's orange can be spotted trekking up the trails. The hum of motorized vehicles can often be heard as it is a popular sport here as well.
Showdown Ski Area
Ski in the heart of Montana at Showdown Ski Area and the Silver Crest Nordic Trail System that consists of weekly groomed trails for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. The Kings Hill Snowmobiling System is one of the finest in Montana and has over 200 miles of marked and groomed trails.
Judith River Wildlife Management Area
These 9,408 acres seek to provide wintering elk and other wildlife with vegetation and to keep the elk numbers in balance. The Judith River Wildlife Management Area also offers public recreation opportunities through wildlife viewing, hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, and photography. Winter is an excellent time to catch a glimpse of elk and deer; however, the area is closed in the winter months due to snow accumulations and road conditions. In other seasons, be on the lookout for white-tailed deer, antelope, raptors, small mammals, and songbirds. Licensed hunters can wander the mountains for a chance to bag an elk, mule, and white-tailed deer, antelope, and black bear. Rifle hunting for elk is by special permit. Archery season opens a general elk hunt and there are some opportunities for upland game bird hunting.
Judith River
The Judith River is a tributary of the majestic Missouri River. Flowing for 127 miles, the river begins in the Little Belt Mountains where it eventually pours into the Missouri near Judith Landing. This area was identified for its white cliffs and spectacular rock formations as well as its floating opportunities. Fish for Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout, Burbot, Channel Catfish, Mountain Whitefish, and Sauger.
